Domestic Money Orders

Domestic Money Orders are an easy way to send money and make payments within New Zealand. They are designed for you to pay bills, send money as a gift or send money urgently around New Zealand - and you don't necessarily need a bank account.

A Domestic Money Order can be redeemed at your local PostShop*.

Two Ways to Send Money Around New Zealand

  • Money Order Certificate

Send a certificate worth up to $1,000 per order to family, friends, or make payments to businesses.

  • Electronic Money Order

Instantly send up to $1,000 per order electronically by advising the recipient of the Money Order Number and PIN. The recipient can receive the money immediately from any PostShop*

Electronic Money Orders are NOT available for payment to businesses.

How Do I Get a Money Order?

  • Simply go to your nearest PostShop* and complete an application form. Or you can download an Application Form (.pdf 47 kb) here, complete it and take it into your local PostShop* to be processed.
  • You can choose to purchase a Money Order certificate or an Electronic Money Order. Post your Money Order certificate to whomever it is made out to, or hand it to them directly. Or, if it's electronic, just call them with the Money Order number, your selected PIN and the amount.

How Much Will it Cost?

You pay the amount on the Money Order, plus a fee of $5 for either a Money Order certificate or an Electronic Money Order.

How Do I Redeem My Money Order?

  • Call into your local PostShop* with your Money Order certificate, along with suitable identification, such as your driver licence or passport, and complete the reverse of the certificate.
  • For Electronic Money Orders, just download a Redemption Form (.pdf 80 kb), complete it and take it into your local PostShop*. You will also need to bring the Money Order number, amount, nominated PIN number and suitable ID to access the funds. Redemption forms are also available at PostShops.

The Money Order can be paid in cash or paid into your bank account, subject to the Terms and Conditions (.pdf 40kb).

Please note that businesses can not redeem their Money Order certificate in cash. All business redemptions will be deposited into a bank account with a registered bank in New Zealand nominated by the person presenting the Money Order certificate.

  • There is no charge to redeem a Money Order.
