Next steps

Re-license your car (pay your car registration), change vehicle ownership or pay road user charges at your local PostShop.

Vehicle licensing (car registration)

Pay your registration at your local PostShop and you’ll receive your licence label on the spot.

Licensing (registration) fees are based on the vehicle type and how long you license your vehicle for.

Change ownership

Selling a vehicle

As the seller, you’ll need to fill out the tear-off portion of your certificate of registration (from when you first registered the car) with the new owner's details and post it to:

Transport Registry Centre,
Private Bag 11777,
Palmerston North 4442

Then hand over the remaining certificate of registration to the buyer.

If you don’t have your certificate of registration, you can still notify your part of the change of ownership process by completing a notice by person selling/disposing of motor vehicle form (MR13A), available at your local PostShop.

Buying a vehicle

As the buyer, you need to complete the changeover at your local PostShop. If the seller has lost their certificate of registration, you can fill out a form (MR13B) at your local PostShop.  Once complete the buyer will need a copy of the transfer receipt for proof of the change of ownership.

Vehicle road user charges

If your vehicle is over 3500kg or uses diesel or any other fuel that isn’t taxed at source, you’ll need to pay road user charges (RUCs). Pay at your local PostShop and you’ll receive your compliance label on the spot.
