PostShop and Kiwibank Changes in Christchurch

18 January 2010

New Zealand Post today announced the PostShop in Hereford Street, central Christchurch, will close on 19 January 2009 because site redevelopment by the owner requires the premises to be vacated.

Customers will be able to use recently-opened PostShops at Colombo Street South and Cathedral Square North. Both of these centrally located PostShops provide full postal, bill payment and Kiwibank services.

The private post boxes at Hereford Street will move a short distance to a new box lobby on the corner of Cashel and Montreal Streets. Customers will be advised of the change.

New Zealand Post also announced the PostShop in Waimari Rd, Ilam, will close on 31 January, 2009, with the support of the franchisee operator.

An increasing number of Ilam PostShop customers are already choosing to use the upgraded Upper Riccarton PostShop, which was relocated in April this year. Ilam customers will be directed primarily to this PostShop, which offers full PostShop and Kiwibank services, but they also have the choice of using PostShops and Kiwibanks at Riccarton and Fendalton as well as a PostCentre at Avonhead.

The private post boxes at Ilam will stay.

Group Manager Retail, Michelle van Gaalen, said New Zealand Post was committed to providing accessible postal, banking and bill payment services in the wider Christchurch area and hoped that the changes would not significantly inconvenience customers.

There are more than 20 full service PostShops and Kiwibanks in the greater Christchurch area and New Zealand Post has made a large investment in additional and improved services in the city in recent years.

"We continually review our PostShop and Kiwibank locations as customers change their shopping habits, as new retail developments open and other areas are redeveloped," Ms van Gaalen said.

New Zealand Post had recently made several improvements to services in Christchurch.

"These include new, relocated or upgraded PostShops and Kiwibanks at Upper Riccarton, Papanui, Colombo Street South, Cathedral Square North, Barrington Mall and Eastgate. In addition, we are well advanced with the upgrading and expansion of the PostShop at Shirley, which is due for completion by the end of the year," said Ms van Gaalen.

She said discussions had been held with the franchise operator of the Ilam PostShop about its future, and he supported the change.

Customers are being advised in advance of the changes by letter, in-store notices and messages in post boxes.
