Mail destroyed in arson attack

3 August 2011

New Zealand Post is working closely with police as they investigate an apparent arson attack on a street receiver (a mailbox where the public posts letters) outside the Invercargill North PostShop.

The contents of the street receiver - located outside the Invercargill North PostShop at 1 Windsor Street, Windsor, Invercargill - were set alight at some time during the hours of darkness on Monday evening (1 August), or in the early hours of Tuesday.

"We can not determine how many items of mail were destroyed in this attack, as the contents of the mailbox were burnt beyond recognition," New Zealand Post spokesman Michael Tull said.

"Anyone who posted a mail item in that location after 5pm on Monday should be aware that their mail has been destroyed, and should consider whether they need to re-send that mail.

"This was a senseless act of vandalism, and we would appeal to anyone who may have information which would assist to contact Invercargill police," Michael Tull said.
