Royal Stamp of approval
NZ Post is celebrating the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle with a beautiful stamp and coin issue.
The stamps feature official photos of the royal couple’s engagement and the big day.
NZ Post Head of Stamps Simon Allison says working on a royal wedding is always an enjoyable task.
“We know there's huge interest in this couple both in the UK and in New Zealand. So we wanted to make this stamp available to the New Zealand public as quickly as possible. And that’s no easy task.
“Obviously Ms Markle had not shared with us information about her wedding dress, so we were waiting, along with the rest of the world, late last night to see the wedding images.
“The stamp design was pre-approved by the Palace using two official engagement images and four wedding placeholder images, so once the official wedding images were made public we worked with urgency into the early hours of the morning selecting the ones we wanted and then sending them straight off into production.”
"Although most of the action with the wedding takes place in the UK, I’m sure many Kiwis have stayed up late to watch the event unfold, and the stamps and coin are one small way that New Zealanders can celebrate the wedding with a little Kiwi touch."
Both the stamps and coin have been designed by New Zealand artist, Dave Burke.
The coin draws heavily on New Zealand imagery and is a great reminder of the relationship between New Zealand and the monarchy. The koru heart surrounding the royal couple is symbolic of an unfurling future and recognised around the world as distinctively ours. The international element is recognised by the incorporation of an English rose and an American rose.
The popular royal couple were married on Saturday 19 May, 2018, at Windsor Castle.
