Things to know before you send overseas

Attaching documents to parcels

If you have documentation, such as shipping labels (including electronic labels and manual consignment notes, invoices, or other certificates) that are not adhesive, you will need to put them into a clear plastic pouch and attach it securely to your parcel. Please ensure the shipping label is facing out. You can get clear pouches at NZ Post store or at our online shop.

Export Invoices or Export Entries

Depending on the contents of your parcel, the value, and what international service you choose, you may need to provide an export invoice or export entry form. The form will need to be securely attached to your parcel. See if you need an Export Invoice or Export Entry form.

The weight of a parcel is used to determine the cost of delivery. Overseas parcels are charged in 50g weight increments (rounded up to the next 50g).

When you process an order through our online Send a Parcel tool:

  • The price you pay when generating your label is an estimate based on the weight, size and destination you enter.
  • Once the item is processed, we check and weigh all parcels and charge your credit/debit card based on actual or volumetric weight, depending on the service you chose.
  • We will notify you of the final price charged to your credit/debit card via an email. The final cost of delivery may be more or less than the estimate.

No, you don’t have to fill out a customs declaration form when sending using our online Send a Parcel tool. Sender, receiver and parcel content information is captured as part of the pay online process.

You can print your label onto white A4 paper or a shipping label.

If you print it on A4 paper, please ensure you size the label appropriately so the text on the label is legible. Sticky tape or glue can be used  to attach the label to the parcel.

Yes, you can save your label to be printed when you’re ready to send your item.

NZ Post account
If you processed your order by signing in to your NZ Post Account, you can view and print labels from your order history, under My account > Orders, when you’re ready to send.

Prohibited and Restricted items:

Due to safety regulations, some items are classified as ‘restricted and prohibited item’, which means they either can’t be sent, or can only be sent under certain conditions.

Please check Dangerous and Prohibited items for complete details and restrictions on sending these and other items.

Different rules apply to items that are sent within NZ or overseas.

Perishable items:

Our network is not suitable to carry perishable items that do not meet food carriage requirement, therefore we don't recommend sending perishable items through our network.

Learn more about our rules on Prohibited, restricted and perishable items.

If you’re a business, you may be able to apply for an exemption from the Standard Terms and Conditions by emailing the sales team.
