Apply for an IRD number at your local PostShop and we’ll organise and forward it on to Inland Revenue for you. There is no cost when you apply for an IRD number with NZ Post or Inland Revenue.
People living in New Zealand who are not new arrivals can get an IRD number by simply filling in an application form and bringing it along with the required documentation to your local PostShop. You will need to bring with you the original documents to be verified as well as legible copies.
You’ll receive your number by mail approximately two weeks after you've applied.
You need an IRD number if you:
- earn any money, for example from a job, benefit, bank account, investment or rental property
- open a bank account or invest money
- join KiwiSaver
- apply for Working for Families
- apply for child support
- apply for a student loan
