Changes to our International products and services from 16 September 2020

The following information applies to Personal customers and also applies to users of a Digital Postage Meter (DPM).

We’re proud to be New Zealand’s largest delivery partner and we’re committed to providing you with a sustainable, market-leading service now and for the future.

We know how important it is to move with the changing needs of the market, to support you with what you need, when you need it. We’re making significant investments into our people, technology, products and services many of which will directly benefit how we enable your business and streamline the way we work together.

Whilst we focus on keeping costs to a minimum and are always looking for innovative ways to provide our service more efficiently, we also have a responsibility to deliver a sustainable international mail and parcel service for New Zealand and do need to review prices annually. Due to the impact of COVID-19, airline capacity globally has decreased resulting in an increase in air freight charges. This, coupled with changes made by the United States Postal Service (USPS), has resulted in increases to the cost of international services we use.  We have had to make the decision to pass some of this additional cost. This decision has not been made lightly, particularly given the impact of COVID-19 and the challenges we know many are facing throughout New Zealand.

From 16 September 2020, we are making the following changes to our International products and services:

For more information or guidance on these upcoming changes, see our questions and answers or don’t hesitate to complete our online enquiry form.

Changes from 10g to 50g increments

From 16 September 2020, the chargeable weight for International Air Small Parcel, International Air Parcel, International Courier and International Express Courier items will be based on 50g instead of 10g increments.

How to calculate the price:

Multiply the weight of the item in kilograms, rounded up to the nearest 50g, by the per kg rate of the sending service. Then add the sending service per item rate.

For example, the cost to send a 0.463kg item to Australia by International Air would be:

$13.6393 + (0.5kg* x $8.75) = $18.01

* Previously this would have rounded to 0.470kg.

Changes to International services when sending to the United States (USPS Changes)

From 16 September 2020, the changes made by the United States Postal Service (USPS) will result in an increase to the cost of international services you use. These changes have increased the rate of sending a parcel to the USA considerably, impacting our under 2kg products the most including International Air Small Parcel.

To ensure that the price increases only impact your sending costs to the United States and not the other areas covered in Zone D, we are introducing a new USA Zone for sending documents and parcels to the USA.

Introducing Volumetric Pricing

From 16 September 2020, we are introducing volumetric pricing for International Air Parcel and International Courier services. This means the chargeable weight for items sent using International Air Parcel, International Courier and International Express Courier services will be based on the greater of its actual weight or volumetric weight.

How to calculate volumetric weight:

Volumetric weight (kg) = Height (m) x Length (m) x Depth (m) x 200

Example:

A parcel with dimensions 150mm (height) x 400mm (length) x and 600mm (depth)

(0.15m  x 0.4m x 0.6m) x 200 = 7.20kgs.

For a parcel with an actual weight  of 4kgs and a volumetric weight of  7.20kgs, the chargeable weight is 7.20kg.

Changes to Electronic Advance Data (EAD)

From 16 September 2020, for border security and clearance purposes, we need to electronically capture the sender, receiver and parcel content information that you provide on the consignment note and Customs declaration forms for all International services (except International Air Letters).
