When to use this search type

Use this to find the postal address format and postcode for:

  • a street address
  • a street, or
  • a suburb, town or city.

Find an address

To find the postal address for a street address, you must enter at least the street number and name. This will find all occurrences of that address in New Zealand.

If you also enter the suburb name or RD number and/or the town or city name, the results will be limited to addresses in that location.

Find a street

To find the postal address format and postcode for a whole street, you must enter at least the street name.

If you also enter the suburb name or RD number and/or the town or city name, the results will be limited to streets in that location.

More than one result may be returned for the same street if it passes through more than one suburb or rural delivery area, town or city, and/or postcode area. Each result is the part of the street in the indicated suburb or rural delivery area, town or city and postcode area. To be sure you have the correct postcode, you should include the street number in your search.

Find a location

To find the postcode for a town or city, you must enter the town or city name. You may also enter the suburb name or RD number, but you must have also entered the town or city name.

Displaying the map for a location will show the boundary of the postcode area.

Tips

Number

You may enter a single letter after the street number where the property has been subdivided. For example, 3A is acceptable if number 3 was subdivided into 3, 3A, 3B etc.

Flat numbers and/or letters must not be entered before the street number. For example, A3, 1/3 and 1-3 etc are not able to be used in the search.

Don't enter a number range, enter a single number only. Normally the low number is the correct number for a postal address. For example, to search for 54-60 Willis Street, enter 54 in the number field.

Sometimes when you search for a street address (including a street number) the Address and Postcode Finder doesn't find the address but displays a street result. For example, if you search for 7 Waterloo Quay in Wellington, the result doesn't show the street number. This is because the street exists but the number you entered can't be found in our postal address database.

Street Name

For a street name with multiple words in it, you can enter the full name, or just the first word. If you enter only the first word, this will find all streets starting with that word. For example, entering Evans will find Evans Street , Evans Bay Road , and Evans Avenue East if they exist, but entering Evans Bay will find only Evans Bay Road .

You may enter the street type (e.g. Avenue, Road, etc) for the street name, which will limit the results to that street type if it exists. For example, entering George will find George Avenue, George Street, George Terrace, etc. But entering George Street will find only streets named George Street if they exist.

Sometimes your search will find a street name that's quite different from the name you entered. This is often because the name you entered is a common use name, not the official name of the street. In this case, the displayed street name is the standardised name you should use in the postal address.

The Address and Postcode Finder allows for minor spelling mistakes in the street name. This works best if you also enter the town or city name.

RD No (Rural Delivery Number)

Enter the number without the letters "RD". For example:

  • to search for RD 1, just enter the number 1
  • to search for RD 4K, just enter 4K
