Delivering a low-emission last mile
By the end of 2032, last‑mile deliveries will be low‑emission - supporting healthier communities by lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Achieving this is a shared journey, and courier drivers sit at the heart of it. A range of support is in place to help make the shift to electric vehicles smoother, more accessible, and more affordable:
EV assessments
Courier drivers have had the chance to try EVs firsthand through demos and trials with automotive partners. Assessments and real‑world case studies from drivers already using EVs across the network offer practical insights, helping others understand what works for their routes and daily routines.
Financial support in the early years
To make the move to an EV easier, our Electric Vehicle Incentive Programme provides upfront financial support for NZ Post contractors investing in electric vehicles. This assistance helps reduce the initial cost barrier in those early years of transition. This is subject to availability. For more information please email [email protected]
Making e-vans more accessible
A $20 million financing agreement partnership – initially with New Zealand Green Investment Finance (NZGIF) and now with Sustainable Fleet Finance - has been put in place to help accelerate the transition of the NZ Post courier fleet even faster.
With this partnership, more than 60 electric vans had been purchased as of December 2023, and these are available for lease or purchase by NZ Post contractors. Each time a van is re‑leased, it becomes even more affordable, giving drivers a practical way to step out of diesel and into low‑emission transport, even if they aren’t quite ready to purchase an EV upfront just yet.
Our corporate, mail and operational support vehicles
By May 2025, 70% of our internal fleet of almost 1000 operational vehicles were electric - including all corporate cars, vans, Paxsters, and half of the forklifts used across our network. This shift has been enabled by a growing nationwide charging network, with around 180 charging points across work sites and employees’ homes keeping our fleet moving efficiently.
Work is now underway to transition the remaining LPG forklifts and begin replacing petrol motorbikes with electric options, helping ensure the journeys behind your deliveries continue to get cleaner year by year.
Low emission trucks
A growing low emission truck fleet is helping reduce the carbon footprint of long distance journeys. Our fleet now includes four different types of low carbon heavy vehicles, each supporting cleaner freight movement across Aotearoa.
The Mitsubishi Fuso E-Canter, our first electric truck, co-funded by EECA, has been on New Zealand roads since 2022, serving both Auckland and Wellington. The Hydrogen-powered Hyundai XCIENT FCEV, also co-funded by EECA, has a range of 450 km and primarily operates between Auckland and Hamilton.
In July 2024, we introduced the Mercedes E-Actros to our fleet, which now operates in the Auckland region. Additionally, three battery-electric Scania trucks were deployed in August 2024, running between the new Auckland Processing Centre and Auckland Airport.
