Things to know before you send overseas
Each country (including NZ) has specific regulations about what can (and can't) be sent. It's your responsibility to check these regulations with the relevant customs authority before you send.
Here are some helpful links to the prohibited and restricted item lists on the customs websites for some of the main countries that New Zealanders send items to:
To understand New Zealand's specific regulations, please read below:
Prohibited and restricted items:
Due to safety regulations, some items are classified as ‘restricted and prohibited item’, which means they either can’t be sent, or can only be sent under certain conditions.
Please check Dangerous and Prohibited items for complete details and restrictions on sending these and other items.
Different rules apply to items that are sent within NZ or overseas.
Perishable items:
Our network is not suitable to carry perishable items that do not meet food carriage requirement, therefore we don't recommend sending perishable items through our network.
Learn more about our rules on Prohibited, restricted and perishable items.
If you’re a business, you may be able to apply for an exemption from the Standard Terms and Conditions by emailing the sales team.
The weight of a parcel is used to determine the cost of delivery. Overseas parcels are charged in 50g weight increments (rounded up to the next 50g).
When you process an order through our online Send a Parcel tool:
- The price you pay when generating your label is an estimate based on the weight, size and destination you enter.
- Once the item is processed, we check and weigh all parcels and charge your credit/debit card based on actual or volumetric weight, depending on the service you chose.
- We will notify you of the final price charged to your credit/debit card via an email. The final cost of delivery may be more or less than the estimate.
No, you don’t have to fill out a separate customs declaration form when sending online. Sender, receiver and parcel content information is captured as part of the Send It process both on our website and in the NZ Post app.
Duties and taxes may apply for some parcels. This is calculated based on several factors, such as:
- Parcel's destination country
- Items inside the parcel, and their country of origin
- Value of items
In some situations the duties and taxes will be paid by sender, and in some situations the receiver will pay.
If you're sending from in-store, please ask the counter staff for more information about your destination country. If you're sending online using Send It overseas and duties and taxes do apply to your parcel, then the receiver will need to pay these fees.
Depending on the contents of your parcel, the value, and what international service you choose, you may need to provide an export invoice or export entry form. The form will need to be securely attached to your parcel. See if you need an Export Invoice or Export Entry form.
If you have documentation, such as shipping labels (including electronic labels and manual consignment notes, invoices, or other certificates) that are not adhesive, you will need to put them into a clear plastic pouch and attach it securely to your parcel. Please ensure the shipping label is facing out. You can get clear pouches at NZ Post store or at our online shop.
General questions

Our online prices are based on the item dimensions provided. As we can’t physically verify parcel size online, the final price may differ from the nationwide guide pricing shown on our website. In-store teams can physically measure items, ensuring pricing reflects the exact parcel size. If a difference occurs, it’s simply due to the different tools and processes used online versus in-store.
If you send with a Courier or Express delivery service, then booking a pickup for your parcel is available. If you're sending with Economy, then your parcel must be dropped off in store.
There are several ways to book a pickup:
- If you already have a label or courier ticket, use our book a pickup form.
- If you don't have a label, use Send It on our website or in app. You'll be able to organise a pickup within the online process.
- If you need to send a parcel urgently within New Zealand using Express, please call 0800 501 502.
You can print your label onto white A4 paper or a shipping label.
If you print it on A4 paper, please ensure you size the label appropriately so the text on the label is legible. Sticky tape or glue can be used to attach the label to the parcel.
Yes, you can save your label to be printed for later.
We will send you an email confirmation with your label attached after you've purchased it in Send It.
That way you can save the email and use the label when you're ready to send. Labels are valid for one-time use only.
Yes, it's possible to use Send It without needing a printer if you're sending within New Zealand and using a Courier service.
Instead of printing the label, you can write the tracking number on your parcel and book a courier pickup. Choosing this option will add 1 additional day to the delivery target.
Here's how it works:
- Go to Send It in NZ.
- Enter your parcel details and select a Courier delivery service.
- You'll then be asked how to label your parcel. Select "Write the tracking number on my parcel".
- Book your courier pickup and pay for your order.
- Write the 20-digit tracking number and the recipient's delivery address clearly on your parcel.
- Have your parcel ready for pickup.
- When the courier picks up your parcel, they will print and apply the sending label at the depot.
Please note this option is not available on the Economy service or when sending overseas.
This information is relevant for customers who have paid online with Send It and opted to write the tracking number on their parcel and book a courier pickup.
To prep your parcel for courier pickup, please do the following:
- Write your 20-digit tracking number clearly on the parcel.
- Please do this in block letters and use the hyphens, e.g. 0079-4210-3095-2574-0730.
- This is not to be confused with the online order number, which is six letters followed by digits.
- We also recommend writing the recipient's delivery address.
No, it's not possible to do this. The handwritten tracking number option in Send It is designed for courier pickup only and cannot be accepted at any NZ Post store.
If you go in store with your parcel, you will need to pay for a new label.
Yes, amount of compensation cover available to you as a sender, will depend on the service you use:
