Away on holiday or for a short time?

If you're going away on holiday or will only be away for a short time, you may prefer to use our hold service  Your mail will be kept safe and delivery will resume when you return.

What items will you redirect?

Each redirect service must be from one old address to one new address. More about the items we redirect in Terms and conditions

Letters and standard mail

We redirect NZ Post mail items only. This doesn’t include mail, such as hospital appointments, that you may receive through other mail providers like DX Mail.

No newspapers or circulars

We can’t redirect these items, so you will need to manage these deliveries separately.

No courier parcels

We can only redirect NZ Post mail items – not CourierPost items. To redirect a courier parcel, you can use the tracking tool.

Redirect your business mail

Moving premises? Redirect your business mail from up to and including 2 months, to 12 months to a New Zealand or overseas address.

Frequently asked questions

When you set up your Redirect my mail service, you have a few options where you can redirect your mail to. Your mail can be redirected to almost anywhere in New Zealand or overseas, on a temporary or permanent basis.

Residential and business addresses

Most redirections are done when you move to a new home or business and you need your mail, which is addressed to your old address, to be delivered to you at your new address. You can check for your new address using our Address and Postcode finder tool.

Rural addresses

If you're moving to a rural address, you'll need to register to become a Rural Delivery customer before we can provide the redirection service. You can do this at your local NZ Post retail outlet by completing a Rural Delivery Service Agreement form.

If you've already registered your rural address and are applying for your redirection online, you'll need to complete additional information when selecting your new address as rural.

PO Boxes and Private Bags

You can redirect your mail to a PO Box or Private Bag. You will need to complete one of the below:

  • an online form
  • an Application to Redirect Mail at an NZ Post retail outlet.

If you want to redirect your mail to both your PO Box and residential address, you'll need to complete a separate application for each redirection service.

ParcelPods

We currently do not offer any parcel redirection services to a ParcelPod location. If you need to redirect a parcel to another location, you can do this using our online tracking tool.

Yes. You can cancel your mail redirection at any time during your mail redirection period.

Mail redirect was set up online

You can change or cancel your redirection by updating it from your Mail Delivery Services.

Mail rediect was set up at an NZ Post retail outlet

You can either complete an Application to Amend Redirection form available from an NZ Post retail outlet, or you can cancel it by completing our enquiry form, or contact us.

What you will need

You will need your redirection number, start and finish dates, and address details.

How long will it take?

Please allow 3 working days from the time of your cancellation for your mail delivery to resume.

If you cancel a mail redirect service before it starts

If you cancel a mail redirect service that you've paid for before it starts, you can get a full refund. If the redirection has already started and has more than a month to run, you may be eligible for a partial refund. Please complete our enquiry form or contact us.

If you have a permanent redirection, we'll write to you three weeks before your redirection is due to expire and offer you an extension. If you want to keep your redirection going, you can extend your redirection online.

Alternatively, you can fill in an 'Application to Amend Redirection' at an NZ Post retail outlet and select the extension period you require. You can also make changes to your redirection (e.g. adding new names or changing the new address) online or using the Amend form.

If you choose not to extend your redirection, your mail will be delivered as addressed when your redirection expires.

How long does it take?

It takes 3 working days to process if completed online.

If you submit your changes at a NZ Post retail outlet, please allow 5 working days for your requested changes to take effect and don't forget to take some identification with you - a Passport, Driver Licence, Hospitality 18+ card, SuperGold card or Community Services Card.

To redirect your business mail, you will need to fill in an application at a NZ Post retail outlet, find out more on redirect business mail

It takes 3 working days to process if completed online, 5 if completed at a NZ Post retail outlet. Once we've processed your application, we'll send you an email or letter confirming that it’s done.

The reason why there are service fees, is that redirecting your mail is a complicated process that involves multiple teams.

Yes, apply at least 5 working days before you want the redirect to start.

You will need:

  • To complete an application (available at NZ Post retail outlets)

  • Your NZ driver’s licencse, NZ passport or Kiwi Access Card. See application for full ID details

  • If you're applying on behalf of a business, a letter on the business' letterhead that states you are authorised to redirect mail on the business' behalf.

 We redirect:

  • Letters and standard mail that are NZ Post mail items only. This doesn’t include mail, such as hospital appointments, that you may receive through other mail providers like DX Mail. Each redirect service must be from one old address to one new address.

  • Tracked mail items, but not tracked Courier items.

  • Any mail with the same initial/surname as names stated on the redirection form.

We do not redirect:

  • Courier items

  • Mail addressed to individuals at commercial and collective addresses (e.g. hotel, motel, house of residence, hostel, hospital, hospice, rest home, public institution, or club);

  • Mail that has insufficient information (e.g. Mail is addressed to William Smith but the redirection form only lists Bill Smith.) Make sure you include all variations of the names being redirected.

  • Mail that cannot be distinguished from other mail addressed to a similar name at the same address (e.g. same surname such as Mr Smith) at the same old address;

  • Mail addressed to two or more people if the Redirection form does not include all these names;

  • Part of the mail addressed to a PO Box or Private Bag (i.e. all mail must be redirected);

  • Mail delivered by local postal operators that are not New Zealand Post;

  • Mail delivered by international operators that are not New Zealand Post;

  • Mail from your overseas address to a New Zealand address. If you have moved to New Zealand from an overseas address, the redirection must be put in place with the postal operator in your country of origin;

  • Mail being redirected to an address outside the New Zealand Post network (eg, a Box operated by another New Zealand postal operator)

  • Newspapers and circulars.

You can apply for a mail redirection by visiting a NZ Post retail outlet. However, you save 30% on fees by completing your redirection online.

Our mail redirect service is the easiest way to make sure your mail follows you when you move home or business, or change your postal address. You can redirect your mail to almost anywhere in New Zealand or overseas, and you can choose to redirect it permanently or temporarily.

For a permanent move (2-12 months)

You can have mail redirected for 2, 4, 6 or 12 months.  We'll write to you three weeks before the expiry date of your service to offer you an extension. If you choose not to extend your redirection service, your mail will be delivered as addressed upon expiry.

For a temporary move (under 2 months)

We''ll redirect your mail until you return to your old address.  However, if you're going away on holiday or will only be away for a short time, you may prefer to use our Hold my mail service where your mail will be kept safe and delivery will resume upon your return.

Please refer to our Mail redirect service fees table for information about costs and associated fees for the redirection service.

For a full list of items not covered by the Mail redirect service, please see the Terms and conditions of the service.

How to apply for the mail redirect service

If you're redirecting personal mail and have a valid New Zealand Driver licence or New Zealand Passport, you can apply online right now.  Once you have completed your application, we will email you to let you know if your request has been accepted or rejected.

For a successful passport verification, all customer details must match including middle name. If they do not match, the customer will need to update their account name to match their passport details

You can also set up your mail redirection by completing an Application to Redirect Mail (available from an NZ Post retail outlet) at least 5 working days before you want the redirection to start, remember:

  • You'll need one form of identification when applying for your redirection,
  • if you're applying on behalf of a business, take a letter on the business' letterhead that states you are authorised to redirect mail on the business' behalf.

Once we've processed your application, we'll send you a letter confirming that we'll be redirecting your mail. If we have any problems processing your application, we'll contact you.

If you are receiving some mail from your previous address, the mail redirection order is in place. We find the two most common reasons why not all of your mail may be being redirected are:

We need to know all of the ways your name details can be displayed

Our sorting machines need all of your name details to work properly. For example:

  • John Smith
  • John W Smith
  • JW Smith
  • John Smith and Jane Jones
  • J Smith and J Jones
  • Parents of Fred Smith

Sometimes, it can even be that the sender misspelled your name or used your nickname. All mail addressed differently to the names you have provided will be delivered to your previous address.

Mail is being delivered to your old address by other mail service providers

The redirection order can only redirect mail sent through the New Zealand Post network. There are at least 10 other mail service providers that deliver mail throughout New Zealand, you'll need to set up a redirection order with them as well to ensure that all your mail is received at the new address. The mail service provider's details will be shown on the envelope.

Hint: New Zealand Post stamps will feature our name, our logo or a silver fern on them

If you haven't received mail about a hospital appointment or about government business, then this may be the reason.

For further information, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment maintains a register of all postal operators.

Please remember a redirection order only covers mail, and cannot include:

  • Tracked and courier items addressed to the old address
  • Mail addressed to individuals at commercial and collective addresses such as a hotel, motel, house of residence, hostel, hospital, hospice, rest home, public institution, or club
  • Part of the mail addressed to a PO Box or Private Bag (i.e. all mail must be redirected)
  • Mail delivered by international operators that are not New Zealand Post
  • Mail from your overseas address to a New Zealand address
  • If you have moved to New Zealand from an overseas address, the redirection must be put in place with the postal operator in your country of origin
  • Mail being redirected to an address outside the New Zealand Post network (eg, a Box operated by another New Zealand postal operator)
  • Newspapers and circulars.

It takes 3 working days(5 if completed online) to process a redirection request. If it has been longer than this and you're not receiving any mail at your new address, follow these steps below:

If you set up your Mail Redirection online:

  1. Go to Mail Delivery Services and log in using your New Zealand Post or RealMe account
  2. Using the left hand menu, click History
  3. In the header, select Redirect
  4. All existing Mail Redirection requests will be displayed
  5. If the Redirection service is in place but the mail is still being delivered to the old address, please Contact Us
