Overseas VAT/GST registration

An increasing number of overseas countries are changing the way they manage VAT/GST collection on low value goods imports.

How will this affect you?

New Zealand companies selling goods to the below destinations may need to register and directly settle VAT/GST with each country's tax department.

The thresholds for the GST/VAT vary by the destination country. For further information please click below and/or contact your accountant

It is your responsibility to check the management of VAT/GST collection on low value goods imports. Acceptance of the item by us for sending does not free you of this responsibility.

We now have a Delivered Duty Paid add-on available for multiple services including Economy, Economy Tracked, Economy Plus and Express International. Due to the US tariff changes that came into effect in August 2025, items sent to the US via our Economy suite and Courier services must use Delivered Duty Paid services. Additional charges apply.

Using Delivered Duty Paid

To sign up to use Express Delivered Duty Paid services please contact your NZ Post Account Manager or our Business Team.

For business senders, when creating electronic labels for international parcels using any NZ Post lodgement tool - such as eShip or Parcel Label V3 - the option to declare an item as a ‘Gift’ is no longer available. This update applies to all services and destinations within our labelling system. Items must now be declared under the appropriate category, such as ‘Sale of goods’ or ‘Commercial samples’, in line with international shipping and customs requirements.

What’s changing?

From 1 December 2025: Orders for physical consignment notes for your business will no longer be processed. From 1 April 2026: We will no longer accept parcels sent with physical consignment notes from business customers.

Where can I create electronic shipping labels?

You can create electronic shipping labels for international sending in eShip (for on-account customers) or My NZ Post Business (for small business customers paying by credit card).

Why the change?

We're discontinuing the physical consignment notes to improve efficiency, accuracy, and compliance. See our global customs clearance guidance.
