What is a consignment note?

Consignment notes are documents that contain information about the carriage of goods. They record the sender’s and receiver’s contact information, a Customs declaration form and the unique reference number for each shipment.

When do I need to complete a consignment note?

A consignment note is always required when you are sending internationally, with the exception of items sent using Economy Letters and Economy Registered services, which generally do not require a customs declaration.

How do I complete a consignment note?

You can complete a consignment note using one of our online shipping tools, or by visiting an NZ Post store.

Personal customers

To do this you can:

Do it online: Use our Send It tool to send your items overseas. Once you have entered all your details, a consignment note will be automatically generated. You will then need to print out your label and consignment note and attach a copy to your parcel.

Visit an NZ Post store: If you prefer to send from one of our stores, you can complete a paper form or - in selected stores - you can complete a digital customs form using your phone.

Business customers

To do this you can:

Use My NZ Post for Business: If you're a small business or send fewer than 50 parcels a week, you can fill out and then print consignment notes as part of your online booking. My NZ Post for Business.

Use eShip or APIs: If you're a larger business or send more than 50 parcels a week, you can create electronic consignment notes with eShip or APIs. For APIs - contact a business specialist and for eShip - Login or  learn more about eShip.

Visit an NZ Post store: If you're sending your parcel from an NZ Post store, you will be able to fill out all the customs documentation you need. Find a store.

How to attach your manual consignment note

You will need to attach the document to the outside of your package.

You can:

• print the electronic note onto adhesive paper and attach or 
• use tape to attach it or 
• place it in a clear plastic pouch. You can get clear pouches at an NZ Post store or at our online shop.

Please ensure the shipping label or barcode is facing out.
